As the first museum in the world, the Stedelijk Museum made all its walls white in 1938. This marked the birth of the concept of the White Cube, which has since become the standard for museum galleries worldwide. The Stedelijk has maintained its boldness and drive for innovation throughout the years.
In 2017, we launched a website that embodies the distinctive and outspoken style that is characteristic of the Stedelijk. Even years later, it has not become outdated.
With the new Stedelijk website, we introduced web brutalism to a wider audience and made a visually bold statement. We also dared to make a significant shift in terms of interaction. During that time, most websites were still made as online brochures. However, we developed a highly intuitive and inclusive website. We understood the usage patterns on mobile devices and focused on swiping and the search function, making the site much more intuitive and playful to navigate. Now, getting lost in the online collection is an enjoyable experience.

Pension fund APG approached GRRR with a request to develop a smart interface in order to build a better relationship with its customers. GRRR immediately noticed that a one-way flow of information, which is often seen in interfaces, does not create a connection between the customer and the company. Therefore, GRRR proposed developing an alternative solution.
Through various tests and research using Design Thinking, two groups were identified: people with questions about their pension and experts who were willing to share their knowledge. This led to the creation of ‘Kandoor,’ a platform for and by customers that forms the APG community for pension-related questions.
To enhance the efficiency of this platform, an artificial intelligence bot was developed, ahead of its time. If the bot is unable to answer a customer’s question, the customer is advised through a one-on-one conversation with an expert. The AI bot learns from these conversations and can provide the correct answer to the next customer. As this has been running for years, APG is miles ahead of competitors who are now also investing in AI. As of 2022, 2.4 million people have been helped by Kandoor.

Since 2020, we have been working on renewing and improving the &#8216;De Slimste Mens&#8217; app, with inclusivity as the primary focus in the most recent update. Inclusive websites and apps can make a world of difference in the digital interactions of the <a href="https://oogfonds.nl/onze-ogen/feiten-en-cijfers/">300,000 Dutch people with visual impairments.</a>
In response to this, we introduced &#8216;De Slimste Thuis&#8217; as a new gameplay element in the &#8216;De Slimste Mens&#8217; app. This addition provides a new gaming experience, allowing answers to be spoken instead of typed. This makes it possible for people with visual impairments to participate in the game. We thoroughly tested the gameplay element by conducting a WCAG audit through Stichting Appt. This allowed us to make any necessary improvements and ensure the inclusivity of the game.
We achieved impressive results from the launch in April 2023 until the end of the summer season in August 2023, with over 321,500 games started and 1.36 million rounds played!

Cultural venue Melkweg aims to inspire visitors to discover new acts. It’s our job to ensure that visitors are inspired to spend a long time on the website.
We created a homepage that presents the diversity of the program in an associative manner. There is no differentiation between ‘big’ and ‘small’ artists, and the overview dynamically refreshes, offering something new with each visit. Utilizing loops, similar to the short videos found on Spotify, we entice visitors to discover and explore unfamiliar acts.
And perhaps less conspicuous but equally important for its success: with new, yet proven technologies, we offer a superb user experience with smooth and fast transitions between different pages. It was quite a technical challenge considering Melkweg’s impressive 30,000 pages. This lightning-fast site benefits not only the visitors but also the Melkweg’s marketing team, as deploying a page now takes minutes instead of hours. It’s quick and sustainable.

How do you get young people to visit museums? In 2006, the Amsterdam Museum Night asked us for a campaign that had to ensure a sold-out event and with the ambition to lower the average age of the visitors.
We developed a strategy that is still used today. We turned the huge program into an interactive guide that playfully helped you where to start. This made it easy to design your own route and share it on social media. And we let young people actively contribute. Including through design competitions for young creatives and through the use of influencers (whom we called ambassadors at the time 😉). Sounds like a logical strategy, doesn’t it? But that was still pretty new in 2006.
And it worked. In the years that we were responsible for the Museum Night campaigns – from 2006 to 2012 – the event was sold out every year and the average age fell from 37 to 26 years.

You don&#8217;t visit a museum website every day, but you do check the weather daily. That&#8217;s why we came up with a widget (an early version of the smartphone widgets) for the Rijksmuseum. 
It showcases art in a glance, while you&#8217;re looking for the weather forecast. Daily exposure to art strengthens your connection with the museum.
It was a clever idea that we could implement for the museum on a low budget. Yet, the impact was significant: it was internationally recognized as an example of the Rijksmuseum&#8217;s experimental mindset.

This is a project from 2005.

Since November 2023, GRRR has become a part of Handpicked Agency, joining a network of digital agencies supporting each other based on their expertise.
